August 2017 Newsletter

NOTE FROM SSS

Good Day,

August has been a busy and challenging month for our members. You can read about the exciting news many members had to share this month in the Members News

We are two weeks away from the Santa Fe Mini Retreat in September. Remember that the registration deadline is tomorrow, September 1st so don’t miss your last opportunity to sign up today!

While Hurricane Harvey has had an impact on our Texas members, they are safe! Rebecca Boenigk has started a collection for those in need after the flooding and devastation throughout Texas. Please read below for specific directions and details on how you can help.

August has also forced us to say goodbye to one of our beloved members, Cathleen Asch. Cathleen joined the Grove early on and was always so helpful to me trying to get our organization more businesslike. Read more below and read her full obituary here. In lieu of a funeral, a Celebration of Cathleen’s Life will be held at her home in Barrington Hills, Illinois on Saturday, October 14, 2017. Email cathleengossmemorial@gmail.com for details.

Read below for some important news on the upcoming Retreats, and what our members have been up to lately.

If you have any updates you would like to share for future newsletters, please email me or Leslie Dube (leslie@belizeangrove.org).

Cheers,
Susan

2018 MEXICO RETREAT

Mayakoba, Mexico! January 18–22, 2018

Know that there has been some concern about traveling to Mexico for the 2018 Belizean Grove Annual Retreat. We are aware that the United States Department of State recently issued a travel alert for the entire country. While it does warn about the safety of areas within Mexico, it does not explicitly say, “Do not travel to Mexico.” We have talked with the Andaz resort, where we are staying, and have attached their official statement addressing our safety concerns. In the case of Quintana Roo, where the gated community of Mayakoba is located, no travel restriction has been issued and the US Government is not recommending citizens curtail or cancel travel to the state. It is also important to note that there have been no incidents within Mayakoba, towards its guests or associates. We feel confident that the space we have booked does not pose a concern to our members.

Room Reservations and Flights:
Event registration is not yet open; however, the room block is now open! We are working with Deb Carr, with Cleveland Circle Travel-American Express, to book rooms at the hotel.

Deb is also able to book flights for members and has secured a discount with United for flights if booked through Deb Carr. United flies from everywhere to Cancun with a connection via Houston/Chicago/Washington Dulles/Newark/ San Francisco/LAX.

To book your room, contact to Deb Carr (deb@cctravel.com), with the below information:

  1. Name as it appears on passports (Make sure Passports have at least 6 months validity upon the return date)
  2. Date of Birth
  3. City of origin / Preferred Carrier or Flights
  4. Departure Date and Return Date
  5. Room type desired
  6. Roommate if applicable
  7. Cell phone number

IN MEMORY OF

In Memory Of:

CathleenAsch_Pic

Cathleen Asch Goss, 67, of Barrington Hills, IL, passed away on July 31, 2017 following complications from treatment for melanoma. She is survived by husband Jan Goss; son and daughter-in-law Alexander Goss and Hannah Boston; siblings Jonathan Asch, Amanda Asch Halle, and Andrea Asch; and stepdaughters Natalie Goss and Hannah Wachs. She was the proud aunt of six and step-grandmother of seven.

Cathleen was born June 14, 1950 in New York City to Florence and John Asch and grew up in Greenwich, CT. She graduated from Bryn Mawr College and The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. A job at AT&T led to her 1985 move to Indianapolis, where she helped found trailblazing computer graphics firm TrueVision, Inc. Though not an engineer herself, Cathleen became an expert in facilitating communication among technological visionaries, marketing departments, and production teams. She relocated to Barrington, IL, in 1994 to join Ameritech as head of its Electronic Commerce Division, before returning to entrepreneurial ventures from 1996 until retirement.

Cathleen’s personal interests were as varied as her professional experience. Her hobbies included travel, archaeology, glass collecting, and making her own beaded jewelry. She loved animals and celebrated Groundhog Day with memorable parties.

In lieu of a funeral, a Celebration of Cathleen’s Life will be held at her home in Barrington Hills, Illinois on Saturday, October 14, 2017. Email cathleengossmemorial@gmail.com for details.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial donation for either of two places of spiritual significance to Cathleen: Camp Arcadia in Maine where she spent her childhood summers (click here to donate); or the Women’s Fund for the country of Georgia which she repeatedly toured in recent years (click here to donate).

INNOCENTS AT RISK

A Note from Innocents at Risk

Dear Friends of Innocents at Risk,

The Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) of 2000, the country’s groundbreaking legislation to end human trafficking and provide much needed support to victims, is currently up for reauthorization. The continued life of this legislation is crucial to our fight against child trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation, and that is why we are asking for your help.

Senators Charles Grassley (R-IA), John Cornyn (R-TX), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) have introduced two bi-partisan Senate bills that reauthorize the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA).The TVPA emphasizes a victim-focused approach to combating human trafficking, while also strengthening restitution to the victims of human trafficking. Critically, a number of new provisions add protections for children. Contact your senators now and tell them to support the TVPA Reauthorization Bills.

This is a bipartisan issue. Member of congress and individuals on both sides of the aisle can all agree: the United States of America must end child trafficking and provide support for victims of these unconscionable crimes. We are counting on you to help us achieve a world where no child is bought, sold, or used for sex.

Innocents at Risk supports the Reauthorization of the TVPA in partnership with EPACT! Please join us with your support and contact your Senator.

Warmest Regards,
Deborah Sigmund
