May 2020 Newsletter

NOTE FROM SSS

Good Day,

I want to thank all the Grovers for creating the numerous zoom calls and happy hours- providing comfort, counsel, and connection to our sisters. Grove stories and inspirations shared remind us to not be so worried or desperate. It’s important to gather around and remind ourselves that we are neither alone or powerless.

We need to manage now with both a telescope and microscope although we live in an increasing turbulent world filled with leadership dilemmas, there are also unlimited opportunities. We must look for new opportunities.

If you have any updates you would like to share for future newsletters, please email me or Leslie Dube (leslie@belizeangrove.org). And don’t forget to share some of your favorite bumper sticker ideas here and we’ll feature in the upcoming Grove updates.

“One day we will wake up and discover we are family.” – Desmond Tutu.

Cheers,
Susan

Quotes

Quotes: Excerpts from Wise Women by Joyce Tenneson:

“I grow more intense as I age, and I am more passionate about the projects I believe in. I still enjoy getting dressed elegantly in the evening and making an “entrance” at a party.” -Brooke Astor

“Many of my friends are experiencing the loss of their beloved pets. I have watched them mourn these deaths and realize it is not the pet they miss, but the loss of their unconditional love. That’s what really hurts.” -Dina Paisner

“The happiest people I know are not those who are the most beautiful, rich, or famous. The happiest people I see are simply those who stay cheerful and try to cheer up others while getting through their own bad stuff.” -Helen Gurley Brown

“Live it, do it, enjoy it- don’t hesitate!” -Jane Greenwood Edwards

“The greatest gift we can give to the world is creating a continuous, uninterrupted loving family structure.” -Aldona Laita

“My grandmother had total focus, an attribute that deeply impressed me. She also had the ability to make me feel like I could do anything, that I could be a leader. She focused all of her positive spirit on me.” -Justice Sandra Day O’Connor

“I keep telling my young friends that sex keeps getting better. After dealing with all of life’s trials and tribulations for so many years, you just realize that there must be a higher power. Once you realize this, you can let life unfold. You get to the point where you just say, ‘I’m not going to worry anymore; I’ve done that long enough.'” -Jeanie MacPherson

“Follow your dreams and don’t let anyone turn you around. I always tell my grandchildren to believe in themselves and never be afraid to go out and seek. You have to go out, work hard, and find it yourself.” -Dolores Fleming

“As we age, we have the chance to reinvent ourselves and to have new adventures. Arthritis took me away from painting. Now I use my artistic abilities to design clothes. As we age, our connection to our deeper womb powers increases and we are often blessed with new gifts of magic.” -Ingeborg ten Hae

Opportunity

Opportunity for Children/Grandchildren:
Hacking Entrepreneurship for High Schoolers
Summer 2020 Program

The Hacking Entrepreneurship class is an immersive online workshop that teaches participants the “Six Essential Skills” framework which is based on five years of research at Harvard and over 200 interviews with today’s top entrepreneurs including the founders of LinkedIn, Airbnb, SpaceX and Tesla Motors, Under Armour, Chipotle, Dropbox, Yelp, and JetBlue, among others.

Each day of Hacking Entrepreneurship opens with a lively concept lecture by Stanford Graduate School of Business Lecturer Amy Wilkinson (Tara) followed by a combination of interactive skill-building exercises, social learning, and concrete takeaways tailored to the interests of high school students. Current Stanford University students work as Teaching Assistants and lead breakout sessions of up to ten participants.

Participants who engage in Hacking Entrepreneurship will leave having gained knowledge of how to spot opportunities, make quick decisions, and build on each other’s ideas. On the last day, participants pitch their ideas in a Shark Tank style competition to say why their startups will be wildly successful in the world.
